Kid's Rooms

Kid's Rooms
As our children grow through the years, their maturity, interest and
individually make their bedroom an ever changing room of the house.  But you
can provide a wonderful and very special bedroom for your child that will
easily and inexpensively adjust over time.

First, plan the room.  Have an overall theme in mind.  Write down your
thoughts and details if you want to.  Will it be whimsical, sports, boats,
cartoon characters?  What are your child's interests?  Then your next steps
are much easier.  You can decorate the walls and ceiling in all kinds of fun
and creative ways using just paint, wood materials and your imagination!

Color is important.  Warm colors are associated with action and excitement.
Not exactly what you want in your kid's room!  So always go with soothing
shades of green, blue, green/blue, yellow, lavender, and so forth.  Paint is
not very expensive and can be easily changed.  And go ahead, paint the
ceiling a color too!  Have fun with it.  Pale yellow walls with a light to
medium blue ceiling and white crown moulding to separate the two is adorable
for younger children and can last for many years in a girl's room!

A football room can be easily created by putting up chair railing.  Beneath
the railing, paint it turf green and put in your white field lines and
numbers! Field lines and numbers can be added after the green is dry with
white paint using tape and stencil numbers! Above the chair railing, stencil
footballs every so often in a pattern that appeals to you on a neutral
background of a sandy color.  Finish with a nice quilt, lampshade, turf
green curtain toppers and other accessories that compliment the theme of the
room.  You can even paint footballs, a special team name and so forth on
window shades!

Stencils are a wonderful way to create a border, a special scene and more!
Even your child's own hand prints using paint can make whimsical and fun
flowers they will take pride in and enjoy for years!  To make a whimsical
flower, simply place a painted hand at 12 o'clock and work around in a
circle clockwise making additional prints at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10!  You will
want to reapply paint to the hand before each impression is made.  Once dry,
fill in your center with a sunny yellow, sherbet orange or lime green.
These look great with or without stems and leaves!  And thumb print beetles
or lady bugs can be fabulous too.  Make a red thumbprint.  After it is dry,
add black paint to make the cute features of your lady bug or beetle.  It
gives the room a very personal touch your child is sure to enjoy and take
pride in.

Wood can be used for crown moulding and chair railing, but also in fun and
practical ways as well!  Make a shelf for all those fun things kids get and
collect.  You can do this on one wall, two walls or around the whole room.
Install the shelving about a foot below the ceiling!  Then fill it up with
all those "things" kids acquire and collect, but do not play with!
Trophies, picture frames, doll collections, autographed footballs and more
will all look great and be out of the way!  Want an adorable yet practical
storage area in a girl's room?  Make indoor flower boxes on the inside of
each window.  You can fill these with stuffed animals and a few flowers from
the dollar store or your local craft store for a fabulous affect!

And all of these ideas can grow with your kids for years to come.  So have
fun creating a fabulous room for your kids with just paint, wood and your
imagination!
