How to Create Faux Leather Accessories with Paper Bags
By Kathy Wilson
Got a great old lamp, or an aging picture frame that could use some unique updating? One of my favorite faux treatments on the cheap can also be used for many accessories. Here is a great idea for adding an elegant treatment to your rooms for almost no money!
Step 1- Choose your item. Tiny items will obviously not show off the faux leather look and items with a lot of intricate detail will also be difficult. Choose items with simple lines that can be wrapped with the paper.
Step 2-Tear brown paper grocery bags, or brown postal kraft paper into small irregular pieces. Be sure to eliminate any straight edges by tearing them away. Crumble the pieces into a ball, then smooth out.
Step 3- Protect your work surface. This is akin to paper mache in messy factor! Dip the paper pieces into ordinary household glue. You could also use polyurethane, but not necessary for accessories since they receive much less wear than a floor or wall. Smooth the pieces over the item, wrapping around edges if necessary. Overlap each piece.
Step 4- Smooth glue over the entire papered surface once or twice with your hands, and allow to dry. Repeat if any paper is not sticking.
Step 5- Voila! Looks like leather, cost next to nothing, and you have a special upscale piece for your rooms! Remember, don’t do every piece in your room with this treatment…I know its fun, but control your need to get carried away! You can also use this treatment on floors or walls.
